A SEARING NEW WORK BY TONY-WINNING THEATER IMPRESARIO Nicolaw
Tony Award-winning choreographer and director Casey Nicolaw is teaming up with Atlanta's Alliance Theatre for a relevant new musical that examines cultural acceptance versus school discrimination. Nicolaw, who is responsible for some of Broadway's biggest recent successes including Aladdin, The Book Of Mormon, Something Rotten and Tuck Everlasting, teams up with writers Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin, with music by Matthew Sklar.
WHAT IS THE PROM ABOUT?
Based on an original concept by Jack Viertel, in turn inspired partly by a true story, we meet a student called Emma who makes the national news when her high school cancels her senior prom rather than allow her to take her girlfriend as her date. Rejected by her peers, she becomes a social outcast - until a group of has-been celebrities take up her cause with gusto, possibly to resurrect their stagnant public profiles.
The road to hell is indeed paved with good intentions as the group of celebs descend on the town to protest the school; however their hamfisted efforts on Emma's behalf end in utter chaos, dividing the town along social and religious lines. Until someone unexpected turns up and saves the day.
The basics
The plotline is partially inspired by the 2010 case of Constance McMillen, who was told by her Mississippi school that she would not be allowed to bring her girlfriend as a date to her senior prom. Rather than back down after protest, the school decided to cancel the prom altogether, making a huge splash in the national news.
