The 74th Tony Awards Moves Online

The Tony Awards will move online this year due to COVID-19, and with a reduced roster of eligible shows

It has already been a year of upsets and disappointments thanks to the C-word, with some shows forced to close after just a few weeks (or days!) of opening and others not being able to enjoy their opening night at all. In an act of defiance, however, the Tony Awards is determined not to be beaten by the Coronavirus and has opted to move the entire show online this year.

Despite only being able to include a handful of the shows that should have been eligible, this year's 74th Tony Awards will surely be more of a celebration of all things Broadway and the resilient spirit of the arts - something that is needed now more than ever as theatres around the US face financial ruin.

Shows that are contending this year include Moulin Rouge, The Lightning Thief, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical and Jagged Little Pill for Best Musical. The category for Best Revival of a Musical has been scrapped entirely thanks to the fact that there's just not being enough eligible shows!

One category that will make for a very exciting ceremony is Best Play, with some of the season's most talked-about productions being included, such as Slave Play, The Inheritance, and My Name Is Lucy Barton.
