With music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics from a variety of writers including Stephen Sondheim and Dorothy Parker, Candide is one of the 20th century's finest and most beloved operettas. Making its Atlanta Opera premiere in spring 2023, the story of the globetrotting titular character and his quest for happiness, Candide is anchored by classics; 'Glitter and Be Gay', 'Make our Garden Grow', and one unforgettable overture. Starring Deanna Breiwick and Jack Swanson, conducted by James Lowe and directed by Alison Moritz.
What is the story?
Based on Voltaire's 1759 novella, Candide is all at once a love story, a drama, a thriller, and a tragedy rolled into one merry-go-round of ever-revived characters who populate our hero's journey. From living in a swanky castle as a Baron's illegitimate son to a beggar on the streets to earthquake-causing heretic and much much more in-between, prepare to follow a dazzling story that fills the auditorium with glee and wonder.
