Sweeney Todd is a darkly intriguing tale that sees a London barber return to his home 15 years after being sent to Australia go around slitting throats, in an attempt to find and get revenge on the crooked judge that sent him away.
The opera features Tony award winning Shuler Hensley playing the protagonist and Meredith Arwady acting as his love interest, Mrs. Lovett. Hensley gained notoriety on Broadway for his roles in Young Frankenstein, Tarzan, Oklahoma! and Les Miserables leading him to receive a prestigious Tony Award, Outer Critics Circle Award and Drama Desk Award.
Based on the Victorian short story The String of Pearls, the story features Sweeney Todd as he cuts the throats of many of his clients and gives the bodies to Mrs. Lovett to use in her meat-pie shop. Sweeney Todd is an enjoyable gory story and masterpiece that opened on Broadway in 1979 and proceeded to open in the West End in 1980. Upon its debut, the musical won the Tony Award for Best Musical and Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
